Embu College is a social responsiveness initiative of Kithinji Kiragu (KK), and his wife, Damaris Wanyaga. It was inspired by KK’s experience at Strathmore College where he did his levels alongside students pursuing accounting professional courses in accounting. KK wanted to bring a “Strathmore” to Embu town. That is still his dream, and the foundation for its realisation has been made.
The college opened its doors in 1995 with 60 students pursuing certificate courses for the Kenya Accounting Technicians Certificate (KATC) AND The Certified Public Accountants (CPA) first level. The college was then located in leased premises (Njigoru Building) in Embu town. In 2002, the college moved to own premises where it is located today along Kanjuru road off the main Embu-Meru Highway, 200M from Embu County Assembly offices.
The College relocated to this new campus in the same year and from 2003, it embarked on expansion of its training programmes: Diploma programmes in Business Administration, Information Technology, Human Resouce Management ,Sales and Marketing examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council, Institute of Commercial Management (ICM) ,Association of Business Executives (ABE) programs and institute of Management Information Systems (IMIS) of UK respectively . In 2009, the College entered into a partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology to be the Embu Center (Campus) of the University training in Diploma and Bachelors degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Information Technology and the Certificate in Bridging course in Mathematics. The first graduates of the college to be awarded Bachelors degree by JKUAT in 2012 included first Class Honors degree in Bachelors of Commerce (Finance option).
In 2010, the College also entered into a partnership with Laikipia University. The college started offering Diploma and Bachelors degree courses in Education including the secondary option, primary option and Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) options. The College currently serves as a Campus for Laikipia University.
Today Embu College offers 69 academic programmes at the post-secondary certificate, degree and diploma levels. The total number of students is over 3000. The medium term goal is to triple the student population in the next three years and develop facilities and capacities to seek charter as a private University with a special niche in ICT- driven skills and entrepreneurship development.
